The sun sets in the south in Italy?
Mr Wannabeawog is a skilled skipper. He has crossed a few seas and can find his way around better than most. Which is why I was stunned when he asked what direction I thought the sun set in Italy.
“West” I mumble.
“No” he says “I think it sets in the south. Bit like the water spins backwards in the toilet.”
Me? Falls about laughing. Captain Wannabeawog needs a dose of navigation. Best find him a boat quick!!
We decide to head to Varenna on Lake Como. What a gorgeous little town. We choose to find a hotel and stay for a bit on our ‘wing it’ tour. We find a room at the Hotel Royal Victoria (didn’t know she was Italian) and explore the little town.
We catch a ferry to Bellagio and boy are we glad we chose to stay in Varenna. Bellagio is wall to wall touristi with corresponding prices. It was nice to browse around for while.
Appertivi were called for so we find a waterfront bar. The waiter was kept busy washing sparrow droppings off the seat cushions. He kept asking us to move. Finally, I told him I’d move when we got some service! Finally, wines were served.
We return to Varenna and make plans for the next few days with the help of the Hotel’s concierge. He tells us we should really visit Castello di Vezio as it commands Lake Como and is very worth the short walk. Afterwards, a tour of the Lake. Sounds wonderful, doesn’t it?
Mmmmmm. We’ll see.
Ciao for now XX
