Flogging grapes in Lanche
Today we have decided to have a lazy drive checking out the villages around Alba. The roads are twisty, windy and narrow. So you know, I drive like Nonna Maria and Mr Wannabeawog drives like Valentino Rossi (except on four wheels). I have busy trying to hold down my oats as he is zipping through the countryside humming along to Gabriella Ferri. The views are simply stunning.
Mr Wannabeawog stops along the roadside to take his panorama shots. The vines are dripping with grapes. I take a few photos and revere the stunning fruits. Look but do not touch! As I sit drooling, I notice a van pull up a few hundred meters up the road. Out hops a stunning young man who promptly begins to steal grapes off the vines. He picks a few bunches, then pops them into his truck and goes back for more. An Italian grape thief! There will be one bottle less of white wine produced this year!
We arrive in Barolo and find a great little wine cafe. I quiz the waitress on their vinos and get a lecture on the best and worst years for the Barolos. So after Mr Wannabeawog returns from the loo, I challenge him to a “Borolo off”. I order two glasses of a 2010 vintage (superb year I was told) and then it’s Mr Wannabeawog’s turn. And on it goes!!
Eros is kind as we did make it home…..I don’t know how as I was passed out on the front seat.
It was a fun day in elegant surrounds. Even if full of thieves 🙂
Ciao for now.
